Swirling Flow

Photography/ Video/ Social Practice. 2020-2022

“Swirling Flow” is a photographic project that intertwines personal memory with local culture. Following my grandfather’s passing, I embarked on an exploration and documentation journey along the Fen River in Shanxi, capturing the current state of cultural relics and monuments in its vicinity. My grandfather had often taken me to explore the temples and curiosities around this area during his lifetime. This experience prompted me to reflect deeply on my own cultural identity. As contemporary individuals encounter these relics of religious and cultural significance, questions arise about their sense of belonging. Despite the historical destruction of many of these cultural relics, modern efforts persist in their preservation for various reasons. These ancient cultural remnants neither seamlessly integrate into the new environment nor entirely vanish, but rather exist in a delicate balance within modern life.
